GIANT SEA SCORPION 'TERRIBLE AT KNITTING' Print E-mail

A MAN-sized sea scorpion with enormous claws probably died out because it failed to master the art of knitting, scientists said last night.

The scorpion's lack of opposable claws meant it failed to master even rudimentary weaving techniques which left it vulnerable to sudden changes in water temperatures.

So while rival beasts regulated their temperatures using a sophisticated layering system of various weaved garments, the sea scorpion had to rely on a crudely constructed seaweed hat.

Dr Henry Brubaker, director of scorpions at the Jules Verne Institute of Gigantic Sea Creatures, said: "Towards the end some of the scorpions had mastered macramé and could just about pull together a poncho. But by then it was just too late."

Dr Brubaker said the scorpion would also have been at a disadvantage because its failure to develop trousers meant it could not easily carry a wallet or purse.

"We have found fossilised knitting patterns for giant claw gloves in the nests of prehistoric octopus who, for obvious reasons, were the main commercial providers of woven garments at the time.

"But no giant octopus of this era would accept a cheque for a pair of super mittens or an enormous vest, it was very much a cash only society."

Scientists previously believed that the giant scorpion died out because it found it hard to go out and meet girls because it was self-conscious about the size of its claws.
