A FILM about Princess Diana that the film-makers say is not about Princess Diana is obviously about Princess Diana, cinemagoers said last night.

The Duchess, starring Keira Knightley, tells the true story of Georgiana Spencer, a young nanny from Kensington who went on to become the most sketched woman of her age.

It depicts Georgiana's marriage to a heartless aristocrat, before becoming a fashion icon, anti-gout campaigner and mother to two sons, one of whom looked remarkably like a captain in the Royal Hussars.

Yet, despite being the 18th Century's most glamorous and saintly duchess, her big-eared husband insisted on having an affair with a woman much uglier than her.

The film also reveals many previously unknown facts about Georgiana's life including her love affairs with a series of Indian medicine-wallas and the son of an Egyptian cloth merchant.

The story is told in a series of flashbacks as Georgiana reveals her secrets to some ponce from the Daily Mail.

But it all ends tragically as Georgiana is killed in a high-speed horse crash while being pursued by a gang of ruthless caricaturists.

Knightley said: "It's got nothing to do with Diana. Okay so we've used the slogan 'There were three people in her marriage'. But they were just random words we pulled out of a sock.

"It could just as easily have been, 'There were three monkeys in her cheese library'."
