THE Tory party was reeling last night after David Cameron's butler revealed he was backing socialist firebrand Tommy Sheridan. 

The butler, known simply as 'Ferguson', has been a Cameron family retainer for more than 30 years and the Tory leader's loyal servant since childhood.

"It's come as a great shock to David," said a senior Tory source. "This is the man who has been ironing his underpants and cutting up his peas for decades."

He added: "It's difficult for ordinary working-class voters to understand, but one does become used to the deference. Now it turns out the chap's been a communist all along. It's absolutely frightful."

The Cameron family found 'Ferguson' living in a ditch while they were on a shooting holiday in Caithness in 1971.

After a bath and bowl of soup he was taken on, first as the assistant to the Cleaner of  Spectacles and later as under butler, weekend relief butler and then full butler to the young Master Cameron.

'Ferguson' has remained steadfastly loyal to his employer and even took his place in a number of canings, both from schoolmasters at Eton and again a decade later from Michael Howard.

Cameron said last night: "It is with great sorrow and regret that I have to announce that my man Ferguson is a communist. I have suspended him on half-pay while he thinks about the consequences of his actions.

"In the meantime I am canceling all political activities until I can find someone to iron my underpants."
