PETER Mandelson last night admitted he was probably undermining the prime minister every time he opens his mouth.
'Strictly between you and me, he's a big, Scottish nutjob', Lord Mandelson told BBC News 24 The business secretary said he had spoken to several journalists on Saturday and was surprised to discover the Sunday newspapers filled with comments that could not be construed as anything other than an attempt to destabilise Gordon Brown. He said: "I told the Sunday Telegraph that Gordon Brown was a brilliant politician and we would work well together even though he's a grade-A psychopath with the social skills of an incontinent wild boar. "To my astonishment they then run the headline 'Brown is a crazy, stinking pigman, says Mandelson'." He added: "We must all stick together and hope that Gordon doesn't sink into one of his manic depressions and start punching secretaries and phoning random shop assistants at three o'clock in the morning to ask why they don't like him." Mandelson, the most successful and respected politician to have resigned from the cabinet amid sleaze allegations - twice, admitted he spoke to Tony Blair before accepting Brown's offer.
"When the prime minister asks you to join the cabinet you really do need the advice of the person who should still be prime minister." He insisted his top priority was to serve the country, protect British jobs and 'slowly but surely, and in the most dishonest and underhand way possible, make sure David Miliband becomes prime minister within the next 12 months'.
