OLD Cumnock Primary yesterday signalled its determination to compete with the Old Firm in the summer transfer market with the sensational signing of Portugal internationalist Eusebio.

Both Rangers and Celtic had been desperate to sign the prolific goalscorer and European cup winner, however he plumped for Cumnock – the team he supported as a boy.

ImageEusebio, 65, said he had twice before come close to joining the Cumnockians, the first time as a ten year-old in 1952, but the deals had fallen through on “footballing grounds”.

The Mozambique-born ball wizard said only now he had retired as a player did it seem right to make the move, hailing it as the culmination of a lifelong ambition to play in the Scottish Premier League.

He said: “Growing up in Mozambique in the 1940s we did little but talk about Scottish football, and dream about playing in Scotland, the home of golf."

Cumnock manager Billy Anderson dismissed fears about Eusebio’s advanced years saying his arrival would only raise the average age of the Primary School side from 11 to 15, still well below the 48 of most SPL teams.

Meanwhile Cumnock’s rivals Ochil Primary, who narrowly missed out on promotion, demonstrated their determination to challenge for the top flight next season by signing former Manchester United striker and Scotland internationalist Denis Law.

The ambitious young side has also approached the agent of legendary Real Madrid and Hungary goalscorer Ferenc Puskas to see if he can be tempted to pull on his boots for Ochil.

Ochil manager Bobby Anderson said he was not deterred by Puskas’ recent death and the need for a disinterment before he could sign on.

He said: “Puskas may be dead but he still has a lot more life in him than most recent big name signings in the SPL.”
